Setting up a Business in China: Legal and non-legal Considerations

Stephen Ching

So you have now vetted out certain promising opportunities in China and have had encouraging meetings with potential Chinese partners. What’s next? Super Lawyer© Stephen W. Ching, Jr., Esquire, a partner and head of the China Practice Group at the 100-year old Philadelphia Law Firm of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP, helps navigate the daunting legal and non-legal maze in China needed to help realize such opportunities in China, to help best monetize those opportunities, and to help develop a long-term relationship with your Chinese partners. As he has done for bar associations and world trade organizations in the US, Mr. Ching provides a primer on how to select the most suitable entity for doing business in China. Having worked closely, as both counsel and entrepreneur, with leading US multinational corporations doing business in China, including on national Chinese Government contracts, as well as with leading Chinese Government entities and corporations, Mr. Ching shares invaluable experience and perspective on what it takes legally and non-legally to develop a long-term relationship between Chinese and non-Chinese partners. A seasoned international litigator and “Philadelphia Lawyer”, who has represented both Chinese and US companies in litigation, and who has been interviewed by the Washington Post and FOX News with regard to defective and counterfeit Chinese goods, Mr. Ching also provides insights on what not to do in China and on avoiding certain pitfalls which commonly plague US companies doing business in China.
